 workFile Vision SaaS 28/01/2010

At the moment there is much talk of organisations looking at ways of reducing the ECM annual licensing and usage costs while still maintaining their level of accessibility and functions. This has even meant organisations moving away from superior ECM solutions in a quest to reduce costs.

However, in recent times we have seen an explosion in web based applications, cloud computing and SaaS (Software as a Service), providing organisations essentially with the means to reduce administration costs. ECM is no different, in essence the right ECM solutions can run in a SaaS fashion, providing potentially massive savings to organisations who have already invested in ECM. For those that haven’t, and are looking to, then SaaS provides a far cheaper route in implementing ECM type functions across a department, or the complete enterprise...

With all this in mind, Andrew Smith (Managing Director) at workFile ECM, announced today that their workFile Vision ECM solutions will be offered to organisations as SaaS by the end of 2010.

“The workFile Vision out of the box experience provides something new to organisations in terms of usability and scalability. We are looking to take this further by providing a SaaS option to organisations. With Vision SaaS, organisations are charged by only the amount of content stored and the number of users accessing this. This really makes it easy for departments and organisations to leverage the power of workFile Vision”

The Vision user experience is something the workFile ECM team are proud of, and they aim to build on this when offering the SaaS implementation. Utilising Microsoft’s Silverlight “OOB” (Out Of Browser) capabilities, Vision will feel like it is installed internally within the organisation, with users accessing the software not from a website, but from a short cut placed on their desktop or within their “start” menu in Windows. At the end of the day, the application is still running over the web, with application updates being picked up by the client machines as and when they access Vision.

“Out of browser increases the usability of the application while maintaining the flexibility of a thin client solution. It’s the best of both worlds for us and the customer” – Andrew Smith explained.

OD Media will be putting together a number of “interfaces” for the Vision SaaS implementation with clients being able to select from a “skin” of choice when using the application.

Andrew Smith explained why they use OD Media for much of the design of the workFile interfaces, especially Vision - “For our look and feel of our application and that polish, we use the designers at OD Media. The beauty of Silverlight in this case is that what they send us we don’t have to dissemble and rebuild, which is essentially what we have to do with more traditional web technologies. It has meant that we can build components that look great very quickly”
